A year in photos: UC in 2020
From January to December, various university photographers recorded the most important milestones of this complicated year. From the Vatican's confirmation of a new period for President Ignacio Sánchez, the COVID-19 pandemic, the referendum uproar, to the University's possible vaccine is developing for the first months of 2021.

It was not an easy year.
2020 will go down in the annals of world history as the year of the first pandemic of the 21st century and one of the most challenging in social and political terms.
In Chile, the COVID-19 health crisis left our society on hold as it strained the public and private health system due to high rates of infection and death. The pandemic devastated the economy, hitting jobs and household finances; it impacted Chileans' mental health and destroyed other national endeavors.
But 2020 was also the year of reinvention: a year that challenged us, and universities had an unparalleled role in providing possible solutions to this worldwide crisis.
UC was no stranger to the pandemic. During this turbulent year, our different photographers' lenses - especially César Cortés and Karina Fuenzalida, professionals from the Office of Communications- managed to record important milestones. Despite the restrictions imposed by the health emergency, they report crucial moments:
- The Vatican's confirmation of a new period of President Ignacio Sánchez.
- The challenge of the pandemic.
- The clamor for a referendum.
- The possible vaccine that UC is developing for early 2021.
Month after month, different events were pressing the day of university life.
"2020 has been a challenge as a photographer but also an opportunity to rethink my work. I've been able to show all the important things UC has done for society," said Karina Fuenzalida, photographer of the Office of Communications.
"One of the moments that hit me the most was when I visited an ICU with COVID-19 patients. I could feel the adrenaline that health workers experienced. It was a whirlwind of emotions. Seeing their dedication to their work and the important role they play in stopping this pandemic was gratifying for me."
